Aphasia is a condition in which the ability to speak or understand language is either absent or no longer works properly. Aphasia is usually the result of an injury to a certain area of the brain. Someone suffering from aphasia may not be able to read words, speak clearly, or understand what others say to them. Those having aphasia are not less intelligent. They just cannot use or understand words. Aphasia is very frustrating for the aphasics and those around them.
Signs and Symptoms Aphasia symptoms vary widely from patient to patient, but there are four basic types:Expressive aphasia (a difficulty in speaking or writing).Receptive aphasia (a difficulty in understanding speech or writing).Anomic aphasia (difficulty in using the correct name for people, places, and things). Global aphasia (loss of almost all abilities to understand and use language or to speak).
